Karibu (pronounced kah-ree-boo) is a Swahili word that means “Welcome Home.”
This name was given in a way to set the tone for the Karibu House Community Center in Detroit. A place where people can come home and feel welcomed, “at home.”

Karibu House, Inc. is an attempt to create a community center in the city of Detroit that
primarily serves the needs of lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, and transgendered persons of
color and their families and allies. Karibu House became incorporated on March 25, 1999,
and obtained nonprofit status on June 1, 2000. Programs have included hosting a Kid’s
Fair every year during Detroit’s Black Gay Pride celebration, monthly discussion/support
sessions, two Komedy Klubs, and the annual pre-Kwanzaa Brunch.
Karibu House believes in providing a safe space for individuals to feel nurtured, supported,
affirmed, and unconditionally accepted. We believe that this process can be accomplished
through support, fellowship, and creative expression which enables people to reach their
fullest potential. It aims to serve as an educational and informational resource to lgbt
persons and to the public in terms of offering documentation of the histories/herstories of
lgbt persons of color, as well as the contemporary life experiences usually omitted from
mainstream sources.
